Young Living Suggested Product Claims

Essential oils have enhanced lives for thousands of years, offering a variety of benefits from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use.

Young Living has always been at the forefront of bringing this ancient tradition to modern users, introducing millions to emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness that can be truly life-changing.

Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.

Any time you hold a bottle of Young Living’s powerful essential oils, you hold nature’s pure essence.

Young Living Essential Oils 101 Class – Introduction

You can access the power of essential oils many ways, but the most common practices include aromatic diffusion, topical application, and dietary consumption. These methods bring the pure essence of health-promoting botanicals to your home, family, and life.

There are three main ways to use essential oils, all are right for different situations, and all three may be used for Young Living essential oils. Disclaimer:  with other brands, there might be inconsistency regarding purity, for safety’s sake, this article only recommends and discusses Young Living oils.

How To Use Young Living Essential Oils

To master your use of essential oils, you’ll need to understand a few things right off the bat. Typically, oils are used in one of three ways.

  • Aromatically
  • Topically
  • Internally

Maybe you’ve unpacked your Premium Starter Kit and now you’re overwhelmed by how to use all these new oils.

Have no fear, many people has been intimidated by how to use essential oils. With a little practice and this simple guide, you’ll be an expert in no time.

How To Use Essential Oils Aromatically?

The simplest way to use essential oils is to just open the bottle and smell. You can also put a drop in your hands, rub them together, then cup your hands around your nose and smell.

For more efficient dispersion, use one of many types of Young Living essential oil diffusers, to fill entire rooms with a scent. Many people’s favorite oil to diffuse is Christmas Spirit, and the must-smell-straight-out-of-the-bottle is Melissa.

The aromatic use of essential oils may be the most familiar. Perhaps you’ve wandered into a spa and been delighted by the aroma of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils or maybe felt the soothing calm of Lavender’s scent in one of your favorite at-home products.

If you don’t know how to use an essential oil diffuser, check the instructions specific to your product for water and oil ratios.

For instance, if you’re using the Young Living Aria™ diffuser, you’ll add 15–25 drops of oil to the water, but if you are using Young Living’s Desert Mist™ diffuser, use only 8–10 drops.

Try this combination in your diffuser before bedtime to promote rest and relaxation:

Even without a diffuser, you can enjoy many of the aromatic benefits of essential oils. Add drops of your favorite essential oils to a cotton ball and place it in areas where you want to disperse the scent – i.e. gym bag, garbage can, or anywhere else that needs a scent upgrade. You’ll be amazed by how well this simple solution works!

How To Use Essential Oils Topically?

The topical use of essential oils is one of the most popular. Once you get the hang of this application, it will probably be one of your favorites! Usually, finding out how to use essential oils on the skin is what turns most people from casual oil users to devotees.

Essential oils can be applied to the crown of your head, behind the ears, to your neck, and to your temples.

If the aroma of an oil is too strong, or your skin is sensitive, you can dilute it with a carrier oil. Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex lets you adjust the strength of the oil according to your preference. You can apply essential oils to most parts of your body, but you want to be cautious of your most sensitive skin.

To get the most benefit from your essential oils, you’ll find that certain applications are more effective than others.

Essential oils are great for massage! For a calming massage, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils can be added to a carrier oil. For rejuvenating muscles after a long workout, experience the cooling effect of Peppermint essential oil’s menthol in a sports massage .

In aromatherapy, many people choose to apply essential oils to the tops and soles of the feet. One common application is using Tea Tree essential oil as part of spa and beauty treatments, especially to help fight odor on particularly funky feet before a pedicure. Just 10–15 drops in a bath of lukewarm water ought to do the trick.

Essential oils can help improve the appearance of healthy skin! With these tricks in your arsenal, you’ll know how to use essential oils on skin to reduce the appearance of blemishes and to give yourself a healthy glow!

Another great use for Tea Tree essential oil is reducing the appearance of blemishes. You can use a cotton swab to apply the oil directly to the affected area.

For smoother-looking skin, you can add Bergamot essential oil to your nighttime routine. Keep in mind that Bergamot and other citrus oils can cause photosensitivity, so you should avoid sun exposure after application.

For an aromatic treat that can also help give your whole body smoother-looking skin, add Lavender essential oil to your next bath.

How To Use Essential Oils Internally?

Did you know that you can get the benefits of essential oils by ingesting them? Young Living’s Vitality™  line was developed to provide a clear distinction between oils for internal use and those for topical and aromatic use.

All are the same pure, authentic essential oils, we’ve just labeled them differently so there’s no confusion!

Adding a drop or two of your favorite Vitality oil to water throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated. Oils like Lemon VitalityGrapefruit Vitality, and Orange Vitality provide a hint of flavor in a calorie-free replacement for soda or juice.

Other flavors like Peppermint Vitality and Thieves Vitality provide a spicy kick throughout your day.

Adding essential oils to recipes is a great way to get potent and unique flavors into your favorite foods.

Love homemade ice cream? Add a sophisticated twist with Lavender Vitality™ in our Blueberry-Lavender Ice Cream.

To give your pasta sauces authentic Italian flair, a drop of Oregano Vitality and Basil Vitality oil each will give your meals powerful flavor.

If you love Thai food, try adding Black Pepper, Lemongrass, and Ginger Vitality oils to this simple soup recipe!

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are very potent, so you have to be cautious when you use them. Remember, a little goes a long way!

Less is more! You can always add another drop, so start slow, whether you’re using your oils topically, aromatically, or internally.

Due to potency, some oils may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or pure vegetable oil to the affected area to dilute.

Always read label directions for each individual oil before use. Do not put essential oils in eyes, ears, nose, or other areas with sensitive skin.

In order to prevent misuse of these precious oils and to ensure that you enjoy their maximum benefit, Young Living Founder D. Gary Young, working with Director of Global Education and Health Sciences Dr. Lindsey Elmore and other product experts on her team, has created this helpful safety guide:

Young Living Essential Oils FAQ:

I’m new to essential oils. How do I use them?
Young Living labels each bottle of Young Living essential oil with directions for how to use it; these directions vary based on your region. Please consult the product label for appropriate usage directions.

What’s the difference between Young Living’s traditional essential oils and Vitality™ essential oils?
Young Living’s large product line includes items that you can use in nearly any aspect of your life. These products are generally labeled for topical/aromatic, dietary, or cleaning usage.

While all our oils meet our Seed to Seal® promise and exacting testing for purity and safety, our traditional essential oils are intended for topical/aromatic use, and our Vitality oils are intended for internal consumption.

This distinction allows Young Living and our members to freely share the dietary and culinary benefits of our oils, thanks to Vitality’s clearly labeled dietary instructions.

I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil—that can be used to dilute essential oils. Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications.

Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil. In fact, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Look for dilution ratios on Young Living essential oil bottles.

Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as mineral oil, baby oil, and petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils.

What is a “hot oil”?
“Hot oils” are oils that can cause a hot or warming sensation when applied to the skin. Examples of hot oils and blends include Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Exodus II™, and Thieves®. For some people, Peppermint’s cooling sensation can be too intense.

Young Living recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use. To perform a patch test, apply 1–2 drops of essential oil to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1–2 hours for any noticeable reaction; however, reactions occur usually within 5–10 minutes.

If you experience a hot or burning sensation or develop a rash, add V-6 or another carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed.

50+ Ways to Use Young Living Essential Oils

What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation?
If discomfort or irritation occurs, stop using the essential oil and apply V-6 or another carrier oil to the affected area. If a rash occurs, this may be a sign of detoxification. Drink adequate water to encourage the release and removal of toxins in your body.

Toxins present in petrochemical-based soaps and skin care products, detergents, and perfumes may trigger some of the detoxification reactions. Consider discontinuing these agents if a reaction occurs. Before using the essential oil again, perform a patch test (see above under “What is a “hot oil?”) and dilute with a carrier oil as needed.

Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the oil with water, but water actually drives oil into the skin and eyes. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off of the skin, as this may increase discomfort.

If essential oil gets in your eye, flush with V-6 or another carrier oil as quickly as possible to alleviate any discomfort. If eye discomfort does not subside within 5 minutes, seek medical attention.

Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas?
Avoid contacting sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals, and mucous membranes with essential oils. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the essential oil with 5–10 drops of V-6 or another carrier oil.

How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use?
Follow the proper usage instructions printed on each essential oil label. Essential oils are very powerful, so start low and go slow. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for adverse reactions.

In most cases, 1–2 drops are adequate, and using more may waste product. Depending on the essential oil, you can gradually build up to 3–4 uses per day, if desired.

Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing?
As with any medical condition, we strongly recommended that prior to using essential oils, you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in essential oil usage.

Some people choose to avoid overuse and excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Idaho Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils.

Let’s Talk Young Living Essential Oils – Part 1

Can essential oils be used on children?
Many essential oils are appropriate for use on children but should be diluted with a carrier oil prior to use. Some Young Living products come prediluted with carrier oil, as indicated on product labels, and are intended for direct application on children.

You can dilute 1–2 drops of essential oil such as SleepyIze™, RutaVaLa™, Gentle Baby™, and Peace & Calming® with a carrier oil and apply to the bottoms of the feet.

How does exposure to sun affect essential oil use?
Some essential oils, especially citrus oils, contain natural molecules that react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity reaction. Young Living labels the essential oils and oil blends that contain these compounds with a warning to avoid sun/UV light for 12–48 hours after applying.

Always use caution when starting to use a new oil. To reduce the risk of sensitivity, use patch testing (see above under “What is a “hot oil?”), dilute, and apply the oil to skin that will not be exposed to sun/UV light. Young Living formulates its beauty and cosmetic products to remove sun-sensitizing agents to reduce the risk of sun sensitivity.

What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils interact with prescription medications?
If you have a disease or medical condition or are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that prior to using an essential oil, you consult with a health care advisor who has experience with essential oils.

Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between any medication and essential oils.
